										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Current blood tests are very inadequate and usually detect chronic disease five to ten years after it has already begun. Good examples are kidney disease, liver disease, heart disease, breast cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s Disease and diabetes.</p>
<ul>
<li>Kidneys can be diseased by 90 percent before tests ever indicate a problem.</li>
<li>Liver disease is often detected after the liver is 70 percent diseased.</li>
<li>Heart disease has often been developing 20 years before traditional tests reveal a problem.</li>
<li>Breast cancer is usually detected with a mammogram, which is eight to ten years before cancer begins to develop.</li>
<li>Diabetes tests include the AIC test, which often detects a problem five to ten years after it could have been detected.</li>
<li>Alzheimer’s cannot be detected, by conventional medicine, until there is a beginning of loss in cognitive function.</li>
<li>Parkinson’s Disease is only detected when a slight trembling occurs in one finger of one hand. By then about 80 percent of all dopamine receptors in the brain have died or been seriously damaged.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Disease usually happens in five distinct stages:</strong></p>
<ol type="1">
<li>Stressed cells happen when there is poor nutrition,high toxin levels, high stress levels and genetic or biochemical deficiencies.</li>
<li>Weakened cells occur when cells have been stressed too long, and cells lose their energy level.</li>
<li>Dysfunctional cells are the third stage of deterioration when cells begin to experienced functional challenges. This is when most traditional tests detect a problem, such as high blood pressure, high glucose or chest pain known as angina.</li>
<li>Mutated cells occur when the nucleus of the cell becomes damaged and can no longer produce a healthy replacement cell.</li>
<li>Diseased cells happen when the cell cannot function and begins to damage other neighboring cells.</li>
</ol>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Virtually everyone has stress. In fact, According to the <em>Stress in America™</em> survey by the American Psychological Association,<sup>1</sup> 39 percent of respondents said their stress increased over the past year, and 44 percent said that their stress had increased over the past five years. The question is, how well do you handle your stress, how does it affect your life, and what can you do about it? The same <em>Stress in America </em>survey indicates the following percentage of Americans is only fair or poor at:</p>
<ul>
<li>Preventing themselves from becoming stressed (44 percent)</li>
<li>Managing or reducing stress once experienced (39 percent)</li>
<li>Recovering fully or recharging after they’ve been stressed (31 percent)</li>
</ul>
<p>The ramifications of chronic stress include increases in illness, including headaches, heart disease, immune deficiencies and digestive problems. To a large extent, this appears to be due to an increased production of stress hormones and decreased immune function.<sup>2</sup></p>
<p>So what can be done to help control stress and reduce its ill effects? The answer is really multifaceted and may include a program of diet, exercise, stress-management techniques such as yoga, and even psychological counseling. In addition, when stress rears its ugly head, nature’s chill pill, L-theanine may be able to help.</p>
<p><strong>L-THEANINE&#8217;S MECHANISM OF ACTION</strong><br />
Asian cultures have often used teas for relaxation effects. The relaxing effect is, at least in part, caused by the presence of a neurologically active amino acid, L-theanine (gamma-ethyl-amino- L-glutamic acid). Tea has the reputation of having less caffeine than coffee but it is the L-theanine in the tea that lessens the stimulant effect of caffeine on the human nervous system. In the brain, L-theanine increases both serotonin and dopamine production<sup>3</sup>, and possibly GABA as well.<sup>4</sup></p>
<p>Evidence from human electroencephalograph (EEG) studies show that it also significantly increases brain activity in the alpha frequency band which indicates that it relaxes the mind without inducing drowsiness. Alpha activity is also known to play an important role in critical aspects of attention. Research indicates that L-theanine has a significant effect on improving mental alertness while promoting relaxation.<sup>5</sup></p>
<p><strong>L-THEANINE AND RELAXATION</strong><br />
According to Mason, two small human studies<sup>6</sup> showed that within 30–40 minutes of consuming 50 or 200 mg of L-theanine there is an increase of alpha wave activity/electrical signals produced by the brain. The perceived relaxation effect in the subjects coincided with the detection of alpha waves. This shows that L-theanine fosters a state of alert relaxation, which is consistent with the fact that anxious people have fewer or smaller alpha waves.</p>
<p>The journal <em>Human Psychopharmacology Clinical and Experimental</em> published a double-blind placebo-controlled study<sup>7</sup> in which sixteen healthy volunteers received 200 mg L-theanine, a pharmaceutical anxiolytic or placebo. The results showed that L-theanine induced feelings of tranquility in the volunteers.</p>
<p><strong>L-THEANINE, STRESS AND ANXIETY</strong><br />
The journal <em>Biological Psychology</em> published a double-blind, placebo-controlled study<sup>8</sup> in which twelve participants underwent four separate trials: one in which they took L-theanine at the start of an experimental, stress-inducing procedure, one in which they took L-theanine midway, and two control trials in which they either took a placebo or nothing. The results showed that L-theanine intake resulted in a reduction in some physiological indicators of stress within 15 minutes, compared to the placebo or control condition. Moreover, analyses of heart rate variability indicated that reductions in heart rate were likely attributable to a reduction of sympathetic nervous activation, suggesting that L-theanine had anti-stress effects via the inhibition of cortical neuron excitation.</p>
<p>Similarly, a placebo-controlled study<sup>9</sup> conducted with pharmacy students found that L-theanine (200 mg, twice a day, after breakfast and lunch) was effective at suppressing the initial stress response of students.</p>
<p>The <em>Journal of Physiological Anthropology </em>published a placebo-controlled study<sup>10</sup> in which 14 participants took either L-theanine + placebo, caffeine + placebo, or placebo only (L-theanine 200 mg, caffeine 100 mg) while performing mental tasks and physiological activities under conditions of physical or psychological stress. The results showed that L-theanine significantly reduced anxiety and reduced the blood-pressure increase in high-stress-response adults. Caffeine tended to have a similar but smaller inhibition of the blood-pressure increases caused by the mental tasks.</p>
<p>The <em>Journal of Functional Foods</em> published a double-blind, placebo-controlled study<sup>11</sup> in which 18 normal healthy subjects were divided into two groups referred to as high anxiety propensity group and the minimal anxiety propensity group. Both groups received 200 mg L-theanine and placebo (at different times)(200 mg/100 ml water) and placebo (100 ml water) in a double-blind repeated measurement design protocol. When tested at 15–60 minutes after consumption, results showed significantly enhanced activity of alpha bands, descending heart rate, elevated visual attentional performance, and improved reaction time response among high anxiety propensity subjects compared to a placebo. However, no significant differences were noticed among subjects with a minimal anxiety propensity.</p>
<p><strong>L-THEANINE AND MENTAL FOCUS</strong><br />
The journal <em>Neuropharmacology</em> published a double-blind, randomized, cross-over study<sup>12</sup> in which 27 participants received 100 mg L-theanine, 50 mg caffeine, a combination of the two, or a placebo. The results were that L-theanine and caffeine each significantly reduced error rates during a sustained attention task. It was noted that the combination of L-theanine and caffeine did not confer any additional benefits over either compound alone.</p>
<p>Another study<sup>13</sup> examined “sensory gating.” Sensory gating describes the processes of filtering out redundant or unnecessary stimuli in the brain from all possible environmental stimuli. Being able to do this is obviously beneficial when you’re trying to focus on a mental task. In the study, L-theanine was given to 14 healthy subjects, and tests were conducted 90 minutes later. The results were that 200 mg and 400 mg significantly improved sensory gating.</p>
<p><strong>CONCLUSION</strong><br />
Research shows that L-theanine is effective at helping to promote relaxation while reducing feelings of stress and anxiety. Furthermore, this amino acid is even helpful in promoting mental focus. Truly, L-theanine is nature’s chill pill.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Most people realize the major risk factors of cancer.</strong></p>
<p>These include smoking, alcohol use and others. The surprising fact is how your oral health has a connection to breast cancer. You may be 11 times more likely to develop breast cancer if you have poor oral health or gum disease. <em>Journal of Breast Cancer Research and Treatment</em> conducted a survey of 3,273 people and found that individuals with chronic periodontal disease (gum disease) had a higher occurrence of breast cancer.</p>
<p>Another study was reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and was conducted between 1985 to 2001. This study also concluded that gum disease increases the risk of breast cancer.</p>
<p>Gum disease has been linked to several general health chronic illnesses, including pneumonia, prostate cancer, stroke, heart disease, problem pregnancy, diabetes and breast cancer.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Pneumonia:</strong> Bacteria in the oral cavity can be aspirated into the lungs and cause respiratory diseases including pneumonia.</li>
<li><strong>Prostate cancer:</strong> In 1986, over 48,000 men were involved in a study conducted by Dr. Dominique Michaud, Imperial College of London. The study concluded gum disease increases the risk of prostate cancer by 14 percent.</li>
<li><strong>Diabetes:</strong> According to the American Academy of Periodontology, diabetic patients are more likely to develop gum disease, which in turn can increase the risk of infection.</li>
<li><strong>Heart disease:</strong> Researchers have found that people with gum disease are almost twice as likely to suffer with coronary artery disease as those without it. As oral bacteria enters the blood stream, it attaches to fatty plaques in the heart blood vessels and contributes to clot formation. These blood clots can then obstruct normal blood flow, which can lead to heart attack.</li>
<li><strong>Pregnancy problems:</strong> Pregnant women who have gum disease may be more likely to have babies that are born too early and too small.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Connecting the Dots</strong><br />
In general, gum disease causes inflammation. Inflammation has been found to be the precursor of heart disease, stroke, pregnancy problems and over all fatigue. In other words, it is a marker for generalized ill-health. This has been confirmed through blood work and C-reactive protein. C-reactive protein is a inflammation marker which decreases when gum infection is brought under control, and increase with advanced gum disease.</p>
<p><strong>Inflammation: The Warning Sign Not to be Ignored</strong><br />
The first sign of gum disease is inflammation. You’ll know when this is present as your gums appear slightly red, tender, and may even bleed when you brush or floss. The main cause of inflammation is bacteria that form a film called plaque, and stick to the gum and teeth surfaces. If this plaque is not removed at least once per day, the problem can advance to severe gum disease. As inflammation advances, the disease effects destruction of the gums and eventually bone. The teeth develop tooth decay, become loose and may have to be extracted. This is why dental visits are very important at least every three months to monitor the health and condition of your teeth and gums, especially with the presence of cancer.</p>
<p>The bacteria that causes gum disease forms a thin biofilm called plaque and accumulates on the gums and teeth. This same bacteria is found in hardened plaque in arteries that lead to arteriosclerosis. A study by the Karolinska Institute reported the bacteria in gum disease can result in the Epstein-Barr virus and cytomegatocirus. These viruses may result in the suppression of the body’s immune system, which can contribute to the incidence of breast cancer.</p>
<p>There are other connections between breast cancer and oral health. Chemotherapy and radiation may be used to kill or slow breast cancer cells by interfering with growth and multiplication of cells. If chemotherapy or radiation is prescribed as part of treatment for breast cancer, side effects can be severe and include:</p>
<ul>
<li>Mucositis, a severe form of inflammation of the mouth.</li>
<li>Increase risk of infection in the mouth. If the drug suppresses white cells, which normally protect against infection, deep cleanings and other invasive procedures such as tooth extraction can result in infection.</li>
<li>Difficulty in swallowing.</li>
<li>Taste alterations ranging from unpleasant to tasteless.</li>
<li>Due to dry mouth, difficulty with speech and eating.</li>
<li>Oral yeast infection from the fungus <em>candida</em>.</li>
<li>Poor nutrition due to difficulties in eating, dry mouth or loss of taste.</li>
<li>Deep aching and burning pain that mimics toothache.</li>
</ul>
<p>Most patients are treated with chemotherapy or radiation. However, some patients may be treated with bisphosphonates, such as Fosamax, Boniva, and others. Recent studies from University of Southern California suggest long-term use of such bisphosphonates may develop into destruction of the jaw bone. The risk is low but increases with chemotherapy.</p>
<p><strong>How to Minimize Side Effects</strong><br />
Most people are aware of hair loss with chemotherapy. But most don’t realize that more than one-third of people being treated for breast cancer can develop complications that affect the mouth. These complications can affect your quality of life. Preexisting or untreated oral disease can even complicate cancer treatment. This is one reason to make sure you visit your dentist at least one month before beginning cancer treatment.</p>
<p>The mouth is made of cells that renew themselves daily. Since chemotherapy and radiation target certain types of cells that regenerate quickly even under normal circumstances, your mouth will be susceptible to damage. If you minimize bacterial plaque buildup by practicing good hygiene, you can decrease the side effects of treatment for breast cancer. The following recommendations are important to follow:</p>
<ol>
<li>Brush with a soft toothbrush or sponge brush to clean your teeth and gums.</li>
<li>Floss gently.</li>
<li>Only use alcohol-free mouthwash, preferably one free of saccharin, but one containing xylitol.</li>
<li>When white blood cells counts are reported by your physician to be low, avoid dental treatment.</li>
<li>Avoid dental treatment for about a week after chemotherapy.</li>
<li>Inflammation starts with red gums that may bleed. Even slight bleeding should not be ignored.</li>
<li>Use toothpaste and chewing gum with xylitol.</li>
<li>Regular dental visits to identify problems before they develop.</li>
<li>If you wear dentures, make sure you keep them clean and that they fit well. Make sure to take them out at night.</li>
